Celebrating HOLI – let our hearts melt! - Col RD Singh

Celebrating  HOLI – let our hearts melt! - Col RD Singh
SIRSA NEWS ( www.SirsaNews.com )

Come Holi and we as a family, look forward to it as another good occasion, for bonding,  and pacifying our estranged  friends. Dressed for Holi, and loaded with packets of dry colours, at about 11 am, my wife and self, set out to mix and mingle. We head for one army unit after another. As we enter, the troops, already playing Holi with their officers,  rush to smear  ‘gulal’ and drench us with buckets of water. We do the same, and join them in dancing, with the rhythm of dholak.  Then, I straight away reach out to the person who is angry with me or not on talking terms for some reason or the other. I hug him and say sorry, sometimes, not even being aware what wrong I have done. But, this gesture is enough to melt the other person, and we are in communication again. I repeat the same in every unit, and every house that we visit. By now some more drinks down, and hardly recognizable, we reach the sports ground where the entire station is gathered to celebrate the festival of colours. The environment is full of mirth and joy. Everyone is playing, laughing, and dancing. We can see ladies having a gala time pushing their colleagues in a pond of water and having great fun. It seems as if the entire station has become one, and the spirit of Holi has permeated in each one of us. No vengeance, no cribs, no ego prevails at this time. Even the general officers can be seen sitting down and enjoying with the junior  officers. My wife does a jig with her school teachers and students, all joined in a happy group. What a beautiful feeling of togetherness, and oneness, even in looks – all look the same.

I am sure people across the country experience similar feelings, in a festive mood. The moment you think of celebrating Holi, it brings a smile and a splash of colours in your mind. Be it a village or city, Holi does bring people together, of all religions and communities.  Barring a few incidents of drunken driving and rowdiness, the festival is vibrant and colourful. It strengthens the secular fabric of India.

We can make the festival even more meaningful by reaching out to our elder parents and relatives, in a greater degree.  As I said above, we say sorry and make up with our ‘enemies’ where we are posted/residing. We even go a mile extra  to please our ‘bosses’ on this day. But, not many of us do the same with our own relatives. If I can say sorry to my boss, beg him/her to pardon me, why can’t I do it to my own real brother who is annoyed with me? In case it is a property problem, which in most cases is, can we not sit together, be a little less greedy, and settle it by give and take. How happy the life will be. Why can’t we go back to our village and hug our old parents on this day. If we can let go of our past unpleasant memories, and forgive and forget our close ones, then not only our roots will remain strong, but our families will be more united. Let this Holi bring us closer not only with our office seniors and colleagues, but also with our kith and kin. On this unique festival, let our hearts melt for everyone. Happy Holi!

Legacy of Fauja Singh, the marathon runner – by Col R.D. Singh

Legacy of Fauja Singh, the marathon runner – by Col R.D. Singh (Retd.)

Most people at 89 can not even walk without support, and here is Fauja Singh who ran a full marathon of 26.2 miles in record 5:40 hrs in London at that age.

With nine marathons and several  winning runs ( ranging from 200m to 3000m)  to his credit, the ‘Turbaned Tornado’ hanged his racing shoes after his last marathon in Hong Kong on 24 February. He finished the 10 Kms race in 92 minutes at the age of 101 plus. “Running is my life” said the proud centenarian marathon runner as he bid a tearful goodbye to marathons.
Fauja has created a sensation, and changed our thinking as regards the old age and fitness. We are senior citizens at 60, hold a walking stick at 80, and quite a few of us bed ridden by 90. On our birthdays, children gift us with walking sticks, medicine boxes, BP apparatus etc. No one cares to present us with walking shoes, and a sports T shirts, because they think 80 or 90 is no age to for serious physical activity. We are expected to rest and meditate, waiting for the D day. We succumb to inactivity, and ailments, becoming a burden for others.

Fauja changed it all.  With no education, and a humble Punjab farmer background, one day, following the loss of his wife and son, he just took to running in his 80s, while staying with his son in London. That was his way of overcoming the depression following the loss of loved ones.   Focused, determined, running daily with a purpose, he kept running one marathon after another, as he progressed towards the Age of 100. He kept winning race after race, be it 200m or 3000m. The world was amazed at his will power and stamina. He set a world record of running a full marathon at Toronto in 2011, as the oldest runner, at the age of 100. Sadly, the record was not recognized by the Guinness World Records because he does not have a  birth certificate to prove his age. However, he has a British passport that shows his date of birth as 01April 1911, and a letter from Queen Elizabeth II congratulating him on his 100th birthday.  Adidas featured him in an ad campaign for sportswear, alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali in 2004.

Even today, the ‘Running Baba’, is full of life and positivity.  Nearing 102, Fauja suffers from no physical ailment, and wishes to continue running to raise funds for charity, and to motivate the young and old to remain fit. The biggest contribution of Fauja Singh, I feel, is that he has made the old to feel young, and set a personal example in physical fitness. “Nothing is impossible”, and “ you are never too old to run” are the endearing legacies of the Tornado Torpedo. May the Fauja spirit prevail in all our challenges..

Watch Video: Press Conference of Ms Barinda Karat CPI(M) leader, held on International Women's Day at SIRSA. She was in Sirsa while en-route Amritsar to Delhi. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is conducting a ‘Sangharsh Sandesh Jatha’ which will traverse the length and breadth of the country. Four main 'jathas' have started from Kanyakumari, Kolkata, Mumbai and Amritsar to Delhi. At the conclusion of these 'jathas', there will be a massive rally at Delhi on March 19 at Ramlila Maidan.
The purpose of the 'jathas' is to highlight some of the main problems and issues facing the people and to set out alternative policies advocated by the CPI(M). The policies of the UPA government at the Centre have resulted in continuous price rise, agrarian distress, growing unemployment and massive corruption. There is no difference between the Congress and the BJP as far as their basic policies are concerned. She was accompanied by Comrade Inderjit Singh, Hannan Mollah, Inderjeet Singh, Charan Singh Vridhi and Rajender Sharma. [Questions by this author at timeline 9:00 and 10:40]
